Interview With Small Island Girl

Tell us more about yourself?

My name is Trisha, I’m from Barbados and I’m the author of the Diary of a Small Island Girl series and the writer behind the Small Island Girl prose on Facebook and Instagram.

What is writing to you?

In a simple sentence, writing is everything and all of me. I was around the age of 13 when I began writing prose and poetry. I was a bit of an introvert as a child, talking about how I felt didn’t come easy for me so I used writing as a form of release and expression.

How did you gain such amount of followers?

I began with 0 followers but I kept at it, day by day sharing my work. I think girls/women appreciated the style and honesty in my writing and it grew from there.

What is your major source of fulfilment?

One of my major achievements to date has been publishing the Diary of a Small Island Girl series.

Every single entry in the Small Island Girl series is very personal to me; I hope that sharing my thoughts and experiences will help others in some way on their journey.

What is your major source of inspiration?

One of the things than drives me is the desire to be better – not the best, not perfect – but better than I was before.

Any plans for the nearest future?

I’m working on volume III for the Small Island Girl series and also a 4th book which will go in a slightly different direction to the poetry/prose.

Who are your role model(s)?

I was very fortunate to have grown up in a family with several smart and determined women – My main role models were my mother and sister.

They were my first cheerleaders and believed in me way before I believed in myself. Having a positive support network is of such great importance and I was blessed to have had one.

How do you relax in your leisure time?

Reading – I like self-help books that encourage positivity, thought stimulation and expansion.  Some books that come to mind are: The Odessey by Homer, Ask and It Is Given by Esther & Jerry Hicks, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, #AskGaryVee by Gary Vaynerchuk and The book of Proverbs.

I could spend hours just listening to music – my playlist ranges from Beyonce, Machel Montano, Enya, Barbara Streisand, Maxi Priest, Sade and Evanescence to name just a few!

Spending quality time with my partner and family.

And of course...writing.

What advice do you have for upcoming writers?

One word - Start.

I look back at my very first entry on Facebook in September 2016 and it’s nothing like it is now.

As a writer, in order to evolve you have to keep on practicing your craft.

There is sometimes an element of fear with writing because it is so personal, I struggled with this but you have to do it anyway. Fear lasts a moment but regret could last a lifetime.
